Children from 14 primary schools in Harrow have chosen the winner of this year’s Harrow Picture Book Award, announced at a special online award ceremony with guests of honour Adam Kay and Henry Paker, winners of last year’s award with their picture book Amy Gets Eaten, the story of a small piece of sweetcorn on a ‘poo-normous’ journey through the human body.
The audience of over 800 children from around the Borough were enthralled to hear Adam and Henry explain how a best-selling picture book is created, and to watch Henry demonstrate how to draw story characters during a very entertaining talk, after which the winner for 2026 was announced.
I Follow the Fox by Rob Biddulph was the winning choice of over 1,500 young judges from a shortlist of six exceptional picture books, each with the theme of toys. In this beautifully illustrated story, a little boy’s tox fox is accidentally left in the park one winter’s day, and that night, the boy dreams of a real fox, calling to him to come out through the snowy streets of the town, back to the park. Now he sees that the fox’s cub has fallen into the icy water, and magically he flies across the ice to rescue him. He follows the foxes through the snow to the place where his toy fox is waiting for him, and joyfully he wakes up the next morning to find his dream has come true and his little fox is once more by his side.
Introduced in spring 2023, the Harrow Picture Book Award is a new prize which aims to introduce younger children to some of the wonderful picture books currently being published, and to encourage reading for pleasure through the sharing and enjoyment of six outstanding books on a chosen theme.
